Merimbula Whale Watching Cruise
This tour operates on selected days during the Northern Migration (May to July) and daily during the Southern Migration (August to early November). Each year, approximately 45,000 humpback whales migrate along the Australian East Coast from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef and back. Other whale species often sighted include Southern Right, Minke, Bryde’s, Orcas, and Blue whales.
From mid-May to the end of July, the whales travel north, full of energy from their summer feeding on krill in Antarctica. During this time, they can be found farther offshore, but as the whale population has increased, more whales are being sighted closer to the coast.

The Experience
From August through late November, the Sapphire Coast becomes a prime location for observing humpback whales during their southern migration. Merimbula, in particular, offers exceptional whale watching opportunities, with sightings often occurring within minutes of departure. The waters off the Sapphire Coast are one of the few places in the world where humpbacks can be observed lateral lunge feeding, a spectacular sight not to be missed. It’s also common to spot mothers and calves in Merimbula Bay, providing captivating entertainment as they journey southward. Our whale watching tours take place aboard ‘Sensational,’ a 14-meter aluminum vessel with a capacity of 50 passengers. For whale watching excursions, we limit occupancy to 39 guests to ensure ample viewing space. The boat is powered by three 425hp Yamaha outboards, designed for efficiency and minimal environmental impact. This adventure tour may involve getting wet, so we recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and a spirit of adventure! In addition to whales, our cruises often encounter a variety of marine life, including:
- Common and Bottlenose Dolphins
- Australian Fur Seals
- Penguins
- Flying fish
- Sunfish
- Turtles
- Various species of seabirds
Join us for an unforgettable marine wildlife experience on the beautiful Sapphire Coast!
